Rolla, MO – The Phelps County Senior Companion Program proudly honors Joanne Dill of Rolla, Missouri, as the Senior Companion of the Month for December 2025. She has been a devoted volunteer since 1998, dedicating her time and energy to improving the lives of seniors in her community.
“I love people,” Dill shared. “When I see a need in people, I do my best to help make their lives better. The Senior Companion Program is a wonderful program that aligns perfectly with my desire to help others. Additionally, I teach Sunday School, which further enriches my mission to find purpose and meaning in my life.”
Originally from West Virginia, she grew up in Detroit, Michigan, as one of 10 children. Later, her family moved to California, where she met her husband, Robert. The couple raised their children in Lakewood, just 10 miles from the ocean, while she ran her own cleaning business and worked in home care.
During their time in Lakewood, Joanne and Robert were inspired by local figure William Croker, affectionately known as “Walkin’ Willie,” who walked across America to promote cancer awareness. His remarkable journey influenced their decision to travel and eventually settle in rural Missouri. Tragically, just two years after the move, Robert passed away, leaving Joanne a widow at the age of 48.
Today, Dill cherishes time with her family, especially her six grandchildren. In her leisure time, she enjoys reading, crocheting, crafting, bowling, and solving puzzles.
As Senior Companion of the Month, she received a beautiful floral arrangement donated by Blossom Basket Florist and a $10 gift card from Sink’s Pharmacy.
The Senior Companion Program is sponsored by the Phelps County Commission, funded by AmeriCorps Seniors, and supported by local groups and individuals. Senior Companions help their peers maintain the independence they’ve worked for all their lives. For more information, call 573-458-6180.
