A tough season came to an end for Steelville High School’s softball team when the Lady Cardinals lost to Houston 31-0 in three innings on May 7 in the quarterfinals of the Class 2 District 3 Tournament. Houston was the number one seed in the district bracket. Steelville’s scheduled regular season finale on May 5 versus Bismarck was cancelled due to inclement weather in the area.
The Lady Cardinals finished the season with a 1-13 record in head coach Jessica Eichholz’s first year at the helm of the program. Steelville took each loss by at least 10 runs before falling by three times that margin in their final game of the season against Houston.
Steelville co-op’d with Viburnum this year after its school board originally voted against co-oping with Bourbon, who went on to win 15 regular season games. Steelville will likely gauge interest with its student body for next year’s team and decide in the spring if they will co-op with Viburnum, another school or just have a team of its own.
The red and white felt the loss of at least five players from last year’s team who decided to not play this season. Because of that, the youthful Lady Cardinals’ team didn’t have a senior on its roster and will hope to return the majority of its squad after boasting a team of seven freshmen, three sophomores and four juniors.
Junior Gracie Mae Boone was an All-District selection in her sophomore season and will likely be recognized this year when the awards are announced. Boone led the Lady Cardinals with a .478 batting average, 11 hits, five doubles, one home run and tied Kaylee Pitts with a team-high eight runs scored.
Freshman Grace Werley also tied Boone with a team-high seven runs batted in. Sophomore Nikki Jensen tied Pitts with a team-high two stolen bases on the season and Aribella Parker led the Lady Cardinals with a .643 on base percentage.
Pitts and Kaylee Piersall, a pair of freshmen right handers, pitched the majority of the innings for Steelville, and will return with significant varsity experience on the mound for their sophomore seasons.
