Lady Cards crush Kingston for first win of season

Steelville High School’s softball team is winless no more after defeating Kingston on April 29 by the run rule.

Lady Cardinal first year head coach Jessica Eichholz earned her first victory in the high-scoring win after spending the past few seasons as an assistant coach.

Steelville’s scheduled games on April 28 versus Salem and May 1 versus St. Genevieve was canceled due to the inclement weather in the area.

The Lady Cardinals played their last regular season game of the season on May 5 in Bismarck and will compete in the first round of the Class 2 District 3 Tournament in Potosi on May 7. Steelville is seeded eighth and will take on number one seeded Houston in the opening round. Salem is seeded second, Bourbon is third and Potosi is the fourth seed. The Lady Cardinal’s game May 5 along with their matchups in the Class 2 District 3 Tournament will be detailed in next week’s edition.

Lady Cards get in win column against Kingston

After being on the other side of the run rule for the majority of their games, Steelville was able to feel the elation of a blowout victory against the Kingston Lady Cougars.

While the matchup may not have started how Steelville would’ve hoped, the Lady Cardinals quickly turned things around and ended the game with a bang. Kingston plated nine runs in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Cardinals didn’t trail for long. Steelville responded with 17 runs in the bottom of the first to seize control of the game.

The Red and White added seven runs in the second and five runs in the third to pull away with a 29-14 run-rule victory in three innings.

Steelville showed patience at the plate, walking 16 times in just three innings of action and every Lady Cardinal scored at least twice.

Kaylee Pitts started on the mound for Steelville, earning the victory after striking out four in three innings. Pitts was also productive at the plate, scoring a team-high five runs while adding two hits, three runs batted in and a stolen base.

Grace Werley collected a pair of singles, four runs scored, a stolen base and four runs batted in. Gracie Mae Boone also drove in four, reached base three times and scored three times.

Lizzy Warden drove in two runs and scored three times and Abigail Schlueter singled, stole a base, scored three times and drove in three runs. Nikki Jensen and Khloe Richardson each walked twice and drove in three runs.

Aribella Parker walked three times, scored three times and drove in three runs and Della Hewkin singled, scored twice and stole a base to round out Steelville’s offensive onslaught.

Kingston senior centerfielder Lila Porter doubled, scored three times and drove in two runs to lead the Lady Cougars.
