Lady Cards lose to Licking, Dixon game gets rained out

Steelville’s High School softball team is still searching for its first win of the season after falling to Licking on April 13 and having its scheduled April 16 game versus Dixon rained out. The Lady Cardinals are now 0-7 on the season with seven regular season games left along with at least two games scheduled for the April 24 and 25 Salem Classic.

Steelville hosted Bourbon on April 20 and traveled to Salem on April 21, which will be detailed in next week’s edition. The Lady Cardinals will then return to Salem to compete in the Salem Classic before traveling to Potosi on April 28 and playing its final home game on April 29 against Kingston.

April 13 vs. Licking

Steelville’s early inning struggles continued against the Licking Lady Wildcats. Licking scored four in the first inning and three in the second to take an early 7-0 lead. Steelville got on the board with a run in the top of the third to make it a 7-1 game. However, Licking blew the game open with a 10 run inning in the top of the fourth to make it a 17-1 game. The Lady Cardinals did show fight, scoring three in the bottom of the fourth, before eventually falling 19-4 in five innings.

The Lady Cardinals had three players collect multiple hits. Freshman Kaylee Piersall returned to the lineup and singled, doubled, scored once and drove in a run. Piersall also came on in relief of fellow freshman pitcher Kaylee Pitts and struck out three Lady Wildcats in 2 2/3 innings on the mound.

Pitts also singled and doubled, drove in two runs and stole a base. She pitched 2 1/3 innings without a strikeout before being relieved.

Junior Gracie Mae Boone roped a double and a single while moving from her normal shortstop position to catcher for the Lady Cardinals. While Piersall, Pitts and Boone accounted for all of Steelville’s hits, freshmen Grace Werley and Khloe Richardson and sophomore Nikki Jenson all reached base via walk or error and each scored a run.
