Steelville High School’s girls wrestling team competed in districts on Feb. 13 and Feb. 14 in De Soto.
The Lady Cardinals didn’t have a wrestler advance to the state tournament. Steelville’s boys wrestling team will compete in districts on Feb. 20 and Feb. 21 in Benton, Mo., which will be detailed in next week’s edition.
Steelville boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams wrestled in Potosi on Feb. 9 in the Potosi Duel. The meet was rescheduled from Jan. 29 due to the inclement weather. This was the last regular season meet for both teams before the Class 1 District 1 tournament.
Girls’ districts
Three Lady Cardinals competed in the Class 1 District 1 tournament. Jaydon Sharp competed in the 105-pound class and lost both of her matches by fall to go 0-2 in districts. Sharp finished her sophomore year with a 10-15 record and picked up six pins throughout the season.
Lydia Smelser wrestled in the 105-pound class. She lost her first match by fall, picked up a dominant win by fall in her second bout and lost her third match by fall to finish 1-2 in districts. Smelser finished her junior season with a 14-12 record and notched 13 pins throughout the year.
Stormee Yates saw the most action of any Lady Cardinal, competing in four matches in the 140-pound class throughout districts. Yates won her first bout by fall, lost her second match by technical fall, won her third match by fall before losing by fall in her final bout to finish 2-2 in districts. Yates finished her freshman season with a strong 21-10 record and picked up 19 pins throughout the year.
Potosi Duel
Five Cardinals competed in seven weight classes and three Lady Cardinals competed in five weight classes. Steelville’s boys’ team went 8-5 in the meet and the girls’ team went 7-2 on the day.
Kyle Todd competed in the 106-pound class and the 113-pound class. Todd went 1-1 in the 106-pound class and 1-0 in the 113 pound class. He is now 3-11 on the season. Jacoby Eaton wrestled in the 126-pound class and went 1-1. Eaton is now 7-15 on the year. Owen Rutledge competed in the 150 and the 157-pound classes. He went 1-1 in the 150-pound class and 1-0 in the 157-pound class. Blaze Alexander returned to action after spending the majority of the year playing for Steelville’s boys’ basketball team. Alexander went 1-2 in the 175-pound class. Aiden Retkowski went 2-0 in the 285-pound class and is now 10-7 on the season.
Jaydon Sharp went 2-0 in the 105-pound class for the Lady Cardinals, and is now 10-13 on the year. Lydia Smelser competed in the 125 and 130-pound classes. She went 1-1 in the 125-pound class and 0-1 in the 130-pound class. Smelser is now 13-10 on the season. Stormee Yates wrestled in the 140 and 145-pound classes and went undefeated. Yates was 3-0 in the 140-pound class and 1-0 in the 145-pound class. She has been the Lady Cardinals’ best wrestler this season, and had a stellar 19-8 record as of the Feb. 9 dual.
