CUBA — Cuba High School’s girl’s basketball team traveled to Newburg on Nov. 25 to take on the Lady Wolves for their second game of the season.
The Lady Wildcat’s tenacious defense that propelled them to a season-opening victory over Richland traveled with them and helped guide Cuba to a 55-38 victory and bring their record to 2-0 on the season.
Cuba seemed to get stronger as the game went on. The Lady Wildcats were up 15-10 after the first quarter and took a 28-21 lead into halftime. Junior guards Leah Schmidt and Mya Garbo scored nine and 10 points respectively in the first half to pace Cuba.
Just like the first game of the season, the Lady Cats’ defense tightened up in the second half as Cuba outscored Newburg 14-6 in the third quarter to balloon its lead to 42-27 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter was closer, but the Lady Cats had pulled away enough to finish with a 17-point victory.
Garbo scored 12 of her game-high 22 points in the second half to lead the Lady Wildcats’ attack. Schmidt finished with 13 points on one three-pointer, two free throws and four two-point field goals. Jaylen Haffer scored eight points and took on the role of the point-forward as she continuously looked for her teammates before her own shot and distributed numerous assists throughout the evening. Annica Farris drained multiple three-pointers and finished with six points. Brooklyn Tate scored four points and freshman Addison McGinnis recorded her first varsity basket to finish with two points. Fellow freshman Makayla Wells saw her first varsity action in the game.
The Lady Wildcats then traveled to Bayless on Dec. 2, which will be detailed in next week’s edition. Cuba will travel to Villa Duchesne on Dec. 4 before playing their first home game on Dec. 9 against St. James.
