Lady Cats defeat Sullivan, fall to Belle

Cuba High School’s girls’ basketball team played in Sullivan on Jan. 15 before hosting Belle on Jan. 17 for Pink Out Night.

The Lady Cats played in the second of three pink out games against Belle in between the Wildcats’ JV and varsity games. The event raised $4,345 through a silent auction and bake sale for a Cuba High School alumni battling cancer. The Lady Cats defeated Sullivan before falling to Belle. Both games are detailed below.

The Lady Wildcats will host Hermann on Jan. 22 and Chamois on Jan. 26. Cuba will then play back-to-back games on Jan. 30 in Hillsboro against Grandview and on Jan. 31 in Steelville for the Cardinals’ Pink Out Game.

Jan. 15 vs. Sullivan

The Lady Cats played their first game on the road in 2026 against a tough 8-4 Sullivan Lady Eagles team. The first half of the game was a close back-and-forth battle where neither team led by more than four points. Sullivan led 9-8 after the first and went into halftime with a 21-19 advantage over the Lady Cats.

Cuba head coach Evin Farris had his team play inspired ball coming out of halftime and the Lady Cats asserted their dominance in the third frame. Cuba outscored the Lady Eagles 16-8 in the third and took a 35-29 lead into the final quarter. The Lady Cats kept their feet on the gas in the fourth quarter and came away with a 45-37 road victory over Sullivan.

Cuba did most of their damage close to the rim, and outscored the Lady Eagles 26-10 in the paint.

The Lady Cats continued to be led by its star junior trio of Mya Garbo, Jaylen Haffer and Leah Schmidt. Garbo poured in a game-high 16 points and dished out three assists and swiped five steals. Haffer posted a stat-stuffing double-double of 11 points, 10 rebounds and added six steals and two assists. Schmidt scored 10 points, grabbed two rebounds and added a steal and an assist. Annica Farris knocked down a pair of three-pointers to finish with six points and Brooklyn Tate scored two points, grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a shot. Olivia Barton scored 10 points to lead the Lady Eagles.

Cuba’s junior varsity team played a half-game after the final buzzer of the varsity game and fell 21-8 to the Lady Eagles.

Jan. 17 vs. Belle

Cuba played a strong Belle team on Pink Out Night in a battle for supremacy in the Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC). The Lady Cats got off to a slow start offensively and scored just four points in each of the first two quarters. Belle found success getting into the middle of Cuba’s zone and took a 24-8 lead into halftime.

The Lady Cats found their rhythm in the second half and scored more points in each of the third and fourth quarters than they did in the entire first half. Cuba outscored Belle 12-6 in the third and 14-9 in the fourth to mount a furious comeback. But the Lady Cats had dug themselves in too deep of a first-half hole and fell 39-34 to a Belle team that seized control of the GVC.

The Lady Cats were led by Schmidt, who repeatedly attacked the rim and finished with 14 points on seven baskets. Haffer once again did a little bit of everything for the Lady Cats, and finished with 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and eight steals. Garbo scored seven points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out three assists. Cuba’s big three were the only Lady Cats to score. Ava Feeler knocked down four shots from deep and finished with a game-high 15 points to lead the Lady Tigers.
