The Cuba High School volleyball team’s season ended on Oct. 23 in the semifinal of the Class 3 District 9 Tournament at the hands of Sullivan High School.
Sullivan was the number one seed in the tournament, and showed why with a commanding sweep of the Lady Cats. Cuba played from behind the whole match and fell 11-25, 17-25 and 13-25 to end a great season on a sour note. The Lady Wildcats finished the season with a 19-8-2 record in head coach Makayla Coleman’s first season on the job; a vast improvement from last year’s 7-14-3 record.
Cuba began postseason play on Oct. 21 when they hosted Salem in the first round of district. The Lady Wildcats entered the tournament as the five seed and were technically the road team against four seeded Salem. The match between the two teams reflected the postseason’s win or go home aspect, and was tight throughout.
Cuba’s senior leader Cailyn Hulsey was out with an injury, but her teammates made sure that her career wouldn’t end on the sidelines.
Cuba won the first set 25-21 in a back and forth set. In the second set, the Lady Wildcats trailed 16-8 when head coach Makayla Coleman called a timeout to settle her team down. Cuba responded and scored 10 straight points, which brought the packed crowd and rowdy student section to their feet. The Wildcats ended up winning the second set 25-22 to put Salem’s back against the wall. Salem fought hard but the Lady Wildcats fed off the energy of the crowd and prevailed, 25-21 to win the match.
That would wind up being the last win of the season for the Lady Cats and in the high school careers of seniors Hulsey and Emma Harris. Despite losing two of its leaders, the Lady Wildcats will return the majority of its roster, including six upcoming seniors Leah Schmidt, Mya Garbo, Jaylen Haffer, Allison Heads, Harley Pilkenton and Brooke Echols and star sophomores Justice Evrard and Jerzey Bright.
Cuba also has seven talented freshmen returning highlighted by varsity contributors Haylee Echols and Makayla Wells. Cuba’s JV team went 17-9 and had won nine straight matches during the season, showing promise for the future of the Lady Cats.
