The Cuba High School softball team played three games in three days on Sept. 29, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
The Lady Wildcats traveled to Hermann on Sept. 29 to take on the Lady Bearcats. Hermann came out strong and scored eight runs in the first inning and 12 in the second to blow the game open. Cuba scored one run in the third inning before the game was called at 20-1 due to a mercy rule. Jerri Forester doubled, which was the only hit for the Lady Wildcats. Shannon Black followed and provided Cuba’s lone run batted in.
The Lady Wildcats traveled to Vienna on Sept. 30 to compete against the Lady Eagles. Cuba went down early again, as Vienna scored ten runs in the first inning and six in the second inning to make it a 16-0 game heading into the third. The Lady Wildcats scored one run in the third, before the game ended 16-1 due to the mercy rule. Black, Brooke Tiner, Gabby Garms and Kaylynn Wilkerson recorded hits for Cuba. Wilkerson provided the Lady Wildcats’ run batted in.
Cuba then returned home on Oct. 1 to take on Russellville. The Lady Wildcats’ struggles continued at Steve Schuette Field as Cuba fell 22-0 in three innings. Cuba didn’t record a hit or have a baserunner in the game.
After having a day off, the Lady Wildcats traveled to Newburg on Oct. 3 to compete against the Lady Wolves.
Cuba’s bats came to life and scored 15 runs against Newburg, but that wasn’t enough for victory as the Lady Wolves put across 25 to win 25-15. The game was knotted at 11 after four innings, but Newburg was able to score 10 in the fifth inning to pull away. Black, Wilkerson, Forester and Garms each had three hits to lead the way for the Lady Wildcats. Tiner added two hits and three runs batted in for Cuba, who remains winless after 16 games.
The Lady Wildcats played at Owensville on Oct. 6 and at Maplewood Richmond Heights on Oct. 7, which will be detailed in next week’s edition.
Cuba will host St. Clair on Oct. 9 before honoring its seniors in their last regular season game on Oct. 13 against St. Clair at Steve Schuette Field.
