Bourbon High School’s girl’s basketball team hosted a pair of games on Feb. 9 and Feb. 13 against Crystal City and Cuba, respectively. The Lady Warhawks lost both games and are now 13-10 on the season. Both games are detailed below.
Feb. 9 was Cancer Awareness Night, and through a silent auction, Bourbon High School raised over $1,000 to benefit a local resident’s battle with cancer. The Lady Warhawks played Lesterville on Feb. 16, which will be detailed in next week’s edition. Bourbon will host Lesterville at 5 p.m. on Feb. 19 in its last regular-season game of the schedule.
The Lady Hawks will compete in the Class 3 District 8 Tournament in Steelville, beginning on Jan. 23. The Lady Hawks are seeded sixth and will play third-seeded Belle at 6:30 p.m. The winner of that matchup will play number-two seeded Fatima at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 25.
Feb. 9 vs. Crystal City
Coming off of a calm, worry-free victory over the Rolla Sr. Lady Royals on Feb. 5, the Lady Warhawks found themselves in an intense, physical battle against the Crystal City Lady Hornets on Pink Out Night.
The Lady Hornets had a slight advantage in the first frame and took a 12-8 lead into the second quarter. Crystal City then outscored Bourbon 13-5 in the second period to turn a four-point lead into a 12-point advantage at halftime. The game reached its climax of scrappy play in the third quarter, as numerous fouls were called and tie ups resulting in jump balls continuously took place as bodies hit the floor. Both teams scored 14 points in the frame and Crystal City went into the fourth quarter up 39-27.
Bourbon outscored the Lady Hornets in the final frame, but missed five free throws in the fourth quarter alone and Crystal City was able to finish second and third chances at the rim to pull away with a 49-40 victory. The Lady Warhawks went to the free throw line 21 times, but made just eight attempts.
Kinzii Withorn knocked down a trio of shots from long distance and scored a team-high 16 points for the Lady Warhawks. Savanna Vance knocked down five free throws and a pair of layups to finish with nine points. Kaitlin King scored five, Ella Biles added four and Kinzey Waldron and Reese Bell scored three points apiece. Senior Maya Hankins netted a game-high 22 points for the Lady Hornets.
Feb. 13 vs. Cuba
The Lady Warhawks hosted its Gasconade Valley Conference counterpart Cuba Lady Wildcats on Friday night. Bourbon ran into a red hot Cuba team, who had won five straight games and were 17-5 entering the game. The Lady Wildcats’ calling card has been its defense, and it held Bourbon to four points in the first quarter and seven points in the first half. Cuba led 38-7 at halftime and didn’t let up its defensive intensity in the second half. Bourbon was held scoreless in the final two frames and Cuba walked away with a 48-7 victory over its Route 66 counterpart.
Bree Bouse netted five points and Savanna Vance scored two as the only Lady Warhawk scorers. Cuba was led by junior guard Leah Schmidt, who poured in 19 points in two and a half quarters of action.
