BOURBON — The Bourbon High School’s girl’s basketball team’s year ended 2025 on a high note.
The Lady Warhawks defeated Valley Park, Jennings and Grandview (Hillsboro) on Dec. 27, 29, and 30 to win the Valley Park Round Robin Tournament. Sophomore Kinzii Withorn was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament after averaging 13.6 points per game for the Lady Warhawks. Bourbon senior point guard Kaitlyn King was also named to the All-Tournament team for her performance. The Lady Warhawks’ wins over Jennings and Grandview are detailed below.
The Lady Warhawks are now 6-5 on the season after winning the trio of games and are hosting the 7th Annual Battle In Bourbon Tournament this week. The Lady Warhawks were seeded seventh out of eight teams and played second-seeded Belle on Jan. 5 in the first round of the tournament, which will be detailed in next week’s edition. The tournament spans until Jan. 10 and the rest of the Lady Warhawks’ matchups are dependent on the result against Belle. Bourbon will then host Valley on Jan. 12 and Viburnum on Jan. 16.
Dec. 29 vs. Jennings
The Lady Warhawks’ toughest test of the Valley Park Tournament was the Dec. 29 matchup against Jennings. Bourbon was locked into a gritty defense battle throughout the game and went into halftime tied at 22. The Lady Warhawks appeared to gain momentum in the third quarter and went into the fourth quarter with a 35-29 lead. Jennings then outscored Bourbon in the final frame to make it a two-point game heading into the final seconds. But the Lady Warhawks’ defense tightened up when it needed to and Bourbon walked away with a 41-39 victory.
For the second game in a row, every Bourbon player who touched the floor scored at least one point. Withorn and Kinzey Waldron were the only double-digit scorers for the Lady Warhawks and finished with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Bree Bouse, Kaitlyn King and Reese Bell each scored three points, Savanna Vance and Hayden Terry each scored a pair and Ella Biles knocked down a free throw to finish with one point.
Dec. 30 vs. Grandview (Hillsboro)
The Lady Warhawks came into the game having lost nine straight games versus Grandview. Bourbon last defeated the Lady Eagles in 2015 and showed that they were determined to end the streak. The Lady Warhawks started slow and scored just 19 points in the first half. After the halftime break, Bourbon came out firing on offense and poured in 32 points in the final two frames to pull away with a 51-32 victory over Grandview to win the tournament and end the program’s losing streak between the two schools.
Waldron knocked down four shots from downtown and hit a pair of free throws to lead Bourbon with 14 points. Waldron averaged 12 points per game in the tournament and appeared to be snubbed of an All-Tournament selection. Withorn continued her consistent play and poured in five baskets from close range and a trio of free throws to finish with 13 points. King chipped in nine points, Vance added seven, Terry scored six and Bouse added two to round out the scoring for the Lady Warhawks.
