Lady Tiger softball knocks off host Cuba during tourney

The St. James Lady Tigers posted their first softball victory of the season in the Cuba Lady Wildcat Tournament Saturday, Sept. 12.

St. James finished 1-2 in the tournament, suffering a 7-6 walk-off loss to Newburg, beating host Cuba 17-2 and losing to Hermann 16-9.

Earlier in the week the Lady Tigers lost at home to Dixon 20-2 Friday, Sept. 11, lost at Union 16-6 Thursday, Sept. 10 and was shut out at home by Sullivan 15-0 Tuesday, Sept. 8 at.

St. James has a 1-7 overall record and are 0-3 in the Four Rivers Conference.

The Lady Tiger junior varsity squad lost to Sullivan 20-0, lost to Union 14-11 and lost to Dixon 15-9.

This week St. James was scheduled to host Cuba Monday, play at Laquey Wednesday (4:30 p.m.) and host Richland at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Nelson Hart Park.

Sept. 12 – Cuba Tourney

STJ 17, Cuba 2: After the Cuba Lady Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, it was all St. James the rest of the way. The Lady Tigers reeled off six runs in the top of the second inning and 11 more in the third. The game was stopped after three innings on the run-rule. St. James outhit Cuba 13-3. Junior Kirrah Drennan smacked a double, two singles and drove in five runs for STJ while freshman Paige Nesbitt had a double, single and scored three times; freshman Anna Hughes and senior Lillian Snelson each had two hits, two RBI and scored twice; junior Millicent Hartley got two hits and two runs; freshman Emma Meurer a hit, RBI and run; freshman Lela Teague hit and RBI; sophomore Macy McCurdy a RBI and three runs, and senior Raegan Witt an RBI and two runs. Teague went the distance in the pitching circle, allowing one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out six.

Hermann 16, STJ 9: Hermann took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the first inning and added seven in the second, four in the third and two in the fourth. St. James got single runs in the bottom of the first and third and seven more in the fourth. The game ended after four innings on the time limit. Drennan had a double, single, two RBI and a run while freshman Aubrey Carroll had a hit, two RBI and a run; Meurer a hit and two RBI; Witt a hit and three runs; Hartley a hit and run, and freshman Piper Sandusky and sophomore Allison Shields each scored a run. Hartley, Teague and Witt shared pitching duties.

Newburg 7, STJ 6: Newburg trailed 6-3 entering the fifth and final inning only to rally past the Lady Tigers in walk-off fashion with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Newburg went on to win the Cuba Tournament championship. Snelson had a triple, single and run; Meurer two hits, three RBI and a run; Nesbitt a hit, run and RBI; Drennan a hit and RBI; Teague a hit, and Witt a run. Teague pitched the entire way, allowing three earned runs on six hits and five walks while fanning nine.

Sept. 11 - Dixon 20, STJ 2: Dixon pulled away early, getting nine runs in the top of the first inning, three in the second and eight in the third. St. James got its two runs in the second. Dixon outhit St. James 8-2. Hughes had a hit, run and RBI while Snelson had a hit and Meurer scored a run for the Lady Tigers. Teague pitched for STJ.

Sept. 10 - Union 16, STJ 6: St. James took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, and Union got three runs in the bottom of the frame. St. James made it 5-1 in the third inning. But Union erupted for nine runs in the fourth and three in the fifth and won by the run-rule. Witt clubbed a homer and scored twice for the Lady Tigers while Drennan got a double, single and three RBI; Hartley had a triple and two RBI; Nesbitt a triple and run scored, and Hughes had a hit and run scored. Teague went the distance in the pitching circle, fanning five.

Sept. 8 - Sullivan 15, STJ 0: The Sullivan Lady Eagles tallied four runs in the top of the first inning, seven in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth. The game was stopped after four innings on the run-rule. St. James had one hit - a double by Drennan. Teague and Witt pitched for STJ.
