Lady Tigers No. 5 Class 3 District 2 seed

The St. James High softball squad is set for a wide-open district tournament.

St. James was seeded fifth for the Missouri Class 3 District 2 Tournament, which was to begin this week in Owensville.

There is not a single team in the district field with a winning record.

Blair Oaks is the No. 1 seed while Sullivan is seeded No. 2, Owensville No. 3, Wright City No. 4, St. James No. 5, St. Clair No. 6 and Cuba No. 7.

In first-round games scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 15 in Owensville, St. James was to face Wright City at 3 p.m., Sullivan vs. Cuba at 5 p.m. and Owensville vs. St. Clair at 7 p.m. Blair Oaks received a first-round bye.

In the semifinals Saturday, Oct. 18, Blair Oaks plays the St. James/Wright City winner at 11 a.m. while the Sullivan/Cuba winner plays the Owensville/St. Clair winner at 1:30 p.m.

The district championship game is slated for 6 p.m. Oct. 21.

St. James won one of three games played last week to end the regular season.

The Lady Tigers lost at home to Newburg in a 29-24 slugfest Monday, Oct. 6 and lost at Hermann 22-7 Tuesday, Oct. 7. And Thursday, Oct. 9 St. James knocked off Crocker 12-10 at Nelson Hart Park.

STJ ended the regular season with a 5-17 record.

Oct. 9 - STJ 12, Crocker 10: After each team scored a run in the first inning, Crocker took a 2-1 edge in the top of the third. However, St. James plated eight runs in the bottom of the third.

Crocker tightened things up with a five-run fourth inning and tied things up 9-9 with two in the fifth. The Lady Tigers would take the lead for good with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Each squad got a run in the sixth frame and the seventh was scoreless, securing the St. James victory.

The Lady Tigers outhit Crocker 14-7.

Sophomore Millicent Hartley belted a double, single, two RBI and scored a run for the Lady Tigers while junior Raegan Witt delivered three hits and scored three times; senior MacKenzie Carroll had two hits, two RBI and a run; junior Madison Shields and senior Elisa Bierman each had a double, two RBI and a run; sophomore Kirrah Drennan two hits and an RBI, and senior Hope Pierce two hits and a run.

Drennan was the winning pitcher, allowing six earned runs, seven hits and seven walks over seven innings while fanning five.

Oct. 7 - Hermann 22, STJ 7: Hermann took control early, erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, one in the second, five in the fifth and nine in the fourth. St. James got three runs in each of the second and third frames and one in the fourth. The game was stopped after four innings on the run rule. Hermann outhit STJ 11-7.

Pierce had a double, single and two RBI while freshman Macy McCurdy had two hits and scored twice; Witt a double and RBI; Shields a hit and two runs, and Drennan a hit and RBI.

Drennan and junior Lillian Snelson both pitched for STL.

Oct. 6 - Newburg 29, STJ 24: The game produced a combined 53 runs on 30 hits and 31 walks as well as a slew of errors. After Newburg got a run in the top of the first inning, St. James countered with four in the bottom of the frame. However, the Newburg Lady Wolves got three runs in the second inning, eight in the third and three in the fourth to take a 15-4 advantage. STJ closed the gap with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth Newburg got four runs, but St. James erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 20-19 edge. However, Newburg responded with 10 runs in the seventh to take the lead for good. STJ got four more in the bottom of the seventh before the rally fell short. Each team had 15 hits.

Snelson clubbed a two-run home run for STJ while Drennan had a double, three singles, seven RBI and two runs scored; Pierce two doubles, two singles and three runs; Bierman had a triple, single, two RBI and a run; senior Baylee Jones a hit, three RBI and three runs; Carroll, senior Brooke Williams and Witt a hit, RBI and two runs each; senior Addalye Felan three runs, and McCurdy two runs.
