The St. James Lady Tiger basketball squad returned to Four Rivers Conference play Thursday, Feb. 5 by traveling to Pacific and blasting the Lady Indians 45-26.
Also last week St. James split two non-conference games, falling at home to state-ranked Bunker 47-35 Wednesday, Feb. 4 and whipping Licking 50-31 at home Monday, Feb. 2.
Last week’s action left the Lady Tigers 9-10 overall and 2-0 in FRC action.
This week STJ is scheduled to play a league game at Sullivan Thursday, Feb. 12. The junior varsity game is to begin at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity contest to follow.
Feb. 5 at Pacific - STJ 45, Pacific 26: The Lady Tigers came out firing in three-pointers during the first period to set the tone. St. James got four treys from three different players to outscore Pacific 16-7 in the first quarter and led the rest of the way. However, Pacific trimmed its deficit to 24-17 by halftime.
In the second half the Lady Tiger defense limited the Lady Indians to just nine total points - three in the third period. St. James led 34-20 heading into the fourth quarter.
“We played a good, tough game,” said St. James head coach Terry Wells. “We played an awesome first half and then the last couple minutes we had some mental breakdowns and Pacific took all the momentum into halftime. My kids responded well after halftime, as we felt the first few minutes of the third quarter would be the deciding factor. We won the quarter and were able to make good decisions in the fourth to grab an important conference win.”
Junior guard Payge Kemnitzer led St. James with 13 points, including four 3-pointers, while junior guard Adalee Richardson added 12 points. STJ hit six 3-pointers total.
Junior Ava Kientzy led Pacific with 12 points.
