Lady Tigers run win streak to four last week

The St. James High softball squad snapped its winless skid in a big way, rolling up a four-game winning streak - including three victories last week.

After ending play in the Cuba Tournament by beating host Cuba 17-2 Sept. 12, the Lady Tigers reeled off three more victories last week. In a rematch with Cuba at Nelson Hart Park Monday, Sept. 14, St. James posted a 14-4 victory. Wednesday, Sept. 16 the Lady Tigers traveled to Laquey and erupted for a 22-0 shutout win. And Friday, Sept. 18 St. James returned home and shut out Richland 13-0.

That raised the Lady Tigers’ record to 4-8.

This week St. James was scheduled to play at Pacific Tuesday, Sept. 22 and host Hermann Thursday, Sept. 24 at Nelson Hart Park in Four Rivers Conference action. And Saturday the Lady Tigers are to host the annual St. James Invitational at Nelson Hart Park.

Sept. 18 - STJ 13, Richland 0: Lela Teague threw a gem in the pitching circle for the Lady Tigers, firing a two-hitter over five innings, allowing six walks and striking out nine. St. James got seven runs in the bottom of the second inning then tallied three in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth. The game was stopped after five innings due to the run-rule. STJ outhit Richland 11-2. Raegan Witt had two doubles, two runs and two RBI for the winners while Anna Hughes got a double, single, two runs and RBI; Emma Meurer had two hits, a run and RBI; Teague two hits; Paige Nesbitt a hit, two runs and two RBI; Lillian Snelson a hit and two runs, and Kirrah Drennan a hit.

Sept. 16 - STJ 22, Laquey 0: Teague fired a four-inning no-hitter to blank the Laquey Lady Hornets. She did not walk a batter and fanned 11. The Lady Tigers erupted for 11 runs in the top of the first inning, one in the second and 10 more in the fourth to end things. STJ had 14 hits. Witt had a double, single, two RBI and three runs; Drennan two hits and six RBI; Meurer two hits, a run and three RBI; Snelson two hits, three runs and two RBI; Teague two hits and an RBI; Hughes a hit, two runs and three RBI; Millicent Hartley a hit, RBI and two runs; Macy McCurdy a hit, RBI and three runs; Nesbitt a hit, RBI and run, and Brooke Warren a run and RBI.

Sept. 14 - STJ 14, Cuba 4: St. James took control early, getting eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and five in the second. After Cuba tallied two runs in each of the fourth and fifth frames, St. James added a run in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the run-rule. St. James outhit Cuba 10-4 and was issued seven walks. Snelson had a double, two singles, three runs and three RBI while Hughes had a double, single and two runs; Hartley two hits, two runs and RBI; Drennan and Witt each had a hit, run and RBI; Nesbitt a hit and run, and McCurdy a run and two RBI. Teague allowed one earned run on four hits and three walks over five innings while fanning nine.
