BOURBON –Bourbon High School’s girl’s basketball team played a pair of games on Dec. 15 and Dec. 18 versus Laquey and Belle, respectively. The Lady Warhawks (3-5) lost both games by at least 18 points and will have over a week off for the holidays before competing in the Valley Park Round Robin Tournament spanning from Dec. 26-Dec. 29. Bourbon will play Valley Park at 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 27, Jennings at 11:00 a.m. on Dec. 29 and Grandview at 11:00 a.m. on Dec. 30. Doors open daily at 10:00 a.m.

Dec. 15 vs. Laquey

The Lady Warhawks came into the Dec. 15 matchup against Laquey with a two game winning streak after victories over Kingston and Chamois. But Bourbon’s streak wouldn’t continue against a solid Laquey team who led from the jump.

The Lady Hawks stayed within striking distance in the first quarter and trailed 15-7 after the first quarter. But Laquey dominated the second quarter and used pressure defense to force numerous turnovers on its way to a 22-3 advantage in the frame to head into halftime up 37-10. Laquey continued its onslaught in the third quarter and led by as many as 37 points before Bourbon scored 10 in the last few minutes of the frame to make it a 50-20 game heading into the fourth. Laquey called off its dogs in the fourth and cruised to a 52-26 victory over Bourbon.

Bourbon was without one of its leading scorers Kinzii Withorn, who missed her second straight game after suffering a lower-body injury in the Dec. 11 game versus Chamois. Freshman Savanna Vance has emerged as a consistent starter for the Lady Hawks and led her team with 11 points. Reese Bell scored all five of her points in the third quarter and Kaitlyn King scored four points all in the opening frame. Kinzey Waldron and Bree Bouse each knocked down three-pointers in the second half to finish with three points. The Lady Hawks had a couple days off before traveling to Belle on Dec. 18 to take on the Lady Tigers.

Dec. 16 vs. Belle

The Lady Warhawks were still without Withorn and also didn’t have Hayden Terry for the matchup, leaving Bourbon with six players for their matchup against Belle. Bourbon trailed 10-4 after the first quarter but battled back early in the second quarter. Trailing by four, Vance drained a three-pointer with 3:30 remaining in the first half to make it a 14-13 game. But that was as close as the Lady Warhawks would get, as the Lady Tigers responded with a 9-0 run to go into halftime with a 23-13 lead. Bourbon seemed to wear down with its shorthanded roster and trailed 37-24 after three quarters, before eventually falling 47-29.

Vance was the Lady Warhawk’s only double-digit scorer and finished with 10 points on a three-pointer, two close-range shots, and a trio of free throws. Bouse and Waldron each chipped in six points, Belle scored four points and King knocked down a deep shot in the third quarter for her only basket of the evening.
