CUBA – Cuba High School’s girl’s basketball team traveled to St. Louis on Nov. 4 to take on Villa Duchesne. The Lady Wildcats continued their strong start to the season by defeating the Saints 52-32 in a game Cuba led throughout.
Cuba came out of the gates strong with a 13-2 first quarter lead before Villa Duchesne hit a last-second fling from deep to make it a 13-5 game after the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats didn’t waver and outscored the Saints 16-9 in the second quarter to take a 15-point lead heading into halftime. Junior guard Leah Schmidt continuously attacked the basket and scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the first half. Schmidt did more than just score and grabbed four rebounds, dished three assists and made three steals.
The Lady Wildcats continued their strong play in the second half en route to their first 20-point margin of victory on the season.
Mya Garbo scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and had two assists and two steals. Jaylen Haffer scored eight on a couple threes and a two-point bucket. Haffer continues to play the point-forward role and led the Lady Cats with four assists and eight rebounds. Freshman Addison McGinnis had her best game of the early season and scored eight points and led Cuba with four steals. Fellow freshman Makayla Wells started the game and scored her first varsity baskets on a three-pointer and a layup off a pass from Haffer en route to five points. Brooklyn Tate added two to round out the Lady Cat’s scoring.
Bea Butler led Villa Duchesne with 12 points.
Cuba’s tenacious defense has been on display throughout the early season as the Lady Cats have yet to give up more than 37 points in a game. Cuba’s stifling defense has forced 56 turnovers in the first three games and has been an x-factor under head coach Evin Farris.
The Lady Wildcats are now 3-0 to start the season heading into back-to-back games at Bayless on Dec. 8 and against St. James on Dec. 9 in Cuba’s home opener. Cuba will then host Lesterville on Dec. 12 before competing in the Orchard Farm Varsity Tournament beginning on Dec. 15 in St. Charles.
