James Memorial Public Library has a busy month of events planned for June, with plenty of family-friendly activities for the community to enjoy.

A highlight of the month’s events is the Women’s Slow Down Circle on Sunday, June 10, from 10 to 11 a.m., in the Betty Lu Hughes Room. Hosted by Life and Wellness Coach Sivani Ishaya, the free community gathering is aimed at helping women slow down, reflect and reconnect.

Participants will explore themes that support well-being and self-reflection and share with each other in a supportive, conversational space. The library will be gauging interest in the event and may decide to make it monthly or weekly if attendance is high.

The weekly book club led by Laurie Lambeth meets at 6 p.m. on Thursdays. The group will be starting “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Ernest Hemingway this week, and anyone is welcome to join. The historical fiction novel is set during the Spanish Civil War.

Storytime this month is at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, and Thursday, June 25, led by Kayla Thompson. The city’s Parks and Recreation department will also be hosting storytime from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays in June, many of which will be held outdoors, weather permitting.

Librarian Ken Kelly also plans to show the Library of Congress’ storytime channel on the big screen in the Betty Lu Hughes room to provide another storytime option.

“They’re very kid-centered,” Kelly said. “I’m going to be doing that here throughout the month of June to find out how many people want to attend it, so they’ll have that extra storytime.”

Board Game Matrix will be back on Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., with the library’s board game collection set out for kids and families to enjoy. There will also be chess lessons for those interested.

“We’re trying to get kids back to board games,” Kelly explained. “You don’t have to watch TV, you can go play a board game, which is better for you.”

Bible Study will continue to be on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 10 to 11 a.m. and newcomers are always welcome to join.,The popular Dinosaur Bones event will be back as well, but is not yet scheduled. Check the library’s Facebook page for updates or call 573-265-7211.

The library will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.
