Linn put together its strongest stretch of the season last week, sweeping three varsity matches before going unbeaten Saturday to win the Hallsville Invitational while the junior varsity also came away with a first-place finish.
The Lady Wildcats went 6-0 on the varsity level during a week that included victories over Cuba, Belle and Centralia before tournament wins against Father Tolton, Centralia and host Hallsville.
For coach Megan Russell, however, the significance went beyond the perfect record. “What I am most proud of is how everyone contributed as the week progressed and into the weekend,” she said. “We had different players step up throughout the week at different times, and we ended the week playing together as a team from start to finish.”
Linn opened the week Monday at home against Cuba, with the JV winning 25-19, 25-18 before the varsity completed a 26-24, 25-17, 25-18 sweep.
Kylie Goans led the varsity attack with 14 kills and a .355 hitting percentage. Lexy Strong and Nicole Grellner served two aces apiece, Grellner handed out 18 assists, and Carley Brandt and Nevaeh Ames finished with three blocks each. Ali Russell and Jorja Kempker anchored the back row with 17 digs apiece.
The Lady Wildcats carried that momentum to Belle on Tuesday. Linn’s JV won 25-19, 25-14, and the varsity followed with a 25-21, 25-9, 25-16 victory.
Goans delivered six aces, while Grellner, A. Russell and Kempker added four apiece. C. Brandt produced 10 kills with a .533 hitting percentage and also recorded four blocks. Grellner finished with 21 assists, and Kempker led the defense with 12 digs.
Centralia provided a stiffer challenge Thursday, particularly at the lower levels.
Linn’s C team fell 25-19, 28-26, but Russell said the performance represented significant progress. “They had probably the best game they have had to date,” said Russell. “They came really close to sending it to three sets but just didn’t have enough to turn that second set around. We changed a few things up with their rotation which seems to be working much better for them, and it’s nice to also see their hard work pay off.”
The JV recovered from a first-set loss to defeat Centralia 20-25, 25-13, 17-15, while the varsity remained unbeaten with a 25-18, 25-22, 25-13 sweep.
Grellner and Strong each served two aces against Centralia. Goans and C. Brandt had 10 kills apiece, A. Russell and Grellner added six each, and Ames finished with five.
C. Brandt converted at a 50 percent kill rate, followed by Ames at 45.5 percent, Goans at 41.7 percent, A. Russell at 37.5 percent and Grellner at 35.3 percent. Grellner added 25 assists, while Goans finished with 10 digs, A. Russell had nine and Kempker added eight.
That set the stage for Saturday’s Hallsville Invitational.
In varsity pool play, Linn defeated Father Tolton 25-20, 25-11 and Centralia 25-10, 25-20 to earn first place in its pool and advance to the cross-pool bracket.
The Lady Wildcats then took down host Hallsville 25-18, 25-11 to finish first in the six-team tournament and complete a 6-0 week.
“It was so rewarding to see the girls playing with so much confidence and at such a high level, especially as the competition got tougher through the week,” said Russell. “They continued to compete, trust each other and raise their level of play when it mattered the most.”
Russell was particularly pleased with the balance Linn displayed Saturday.
“The varsity players all dominated the tournament Saturday, which was a great way to finish the week,” she said.
Linn’s JV also enjoyed a big Saturday, defeating Centralia 25-19, 25-20 and Kirksville 25-19, 25-20. The Lady Wildcats split two sets with Father Tolton, falling 25-19 before answering with a 25-19 win, then defeated Hallsville 25-23, 25-13 to finish first on the day.
Russell said the JV has continued to make noticeable strides, particularly with the mental side of the game.
“We continue to work on the mental aspect of the game and focus on what they can control, which is serving and moving on from a bad play,” she said. “As this improves, they really look like a solid unit playing together. Each of them are contributing in major ways to their game.”
JV coach Terry Brandt has had a front-row seat to that development and said the growth extends beyond individual performances. “It’s amazing to witness these girls grow not only as individuals but as a team and a program,” said Brandt. “The games they played this week have been flat-out fights to get the wins that they deserve. No games have been easy. They have had to keep a lead or come back from being down to get the win. They never give up and respond every time Megan and I challenge them.”
Perhaps the clearest example of the program-wide chemistry came away from the court.
Brandt said the JV players repeatedly moved between gyms Saturday after finishing their own matches so they could support the varsity.
“This weekend the girls would play in one gym and then walk/run to another gym to root on the varsity, only to turn around and do it again and again,” he said. “They were louder than the home team.”
For Russell, that willingness to support one another — combined with the increasingly balanced production on the floor — was what made the week stand out.
“We had different players step up throughout the week at different times,” she said, “and we ended the week playing together as a team from start to finish.”
