The meaning behind Adopt A Vet is simple but sentimental–to embrace the magic of the holiday season and to let veterans know how valued they are and how their service to the country is deeply appreciated.
“The Adopt A Vet program is a holiday fundraising event that we have had at our Missouri Veterans Home (MVH)-St. James, for many years,” said Lorie Steen, MVH assistant administrator. “While our veterans receive exceptional care, these monetary donations ensure that all our veterans receive a holiday gift and a special meal with their loved ones…This is a holiday tradition that our veterans and their families love each year.”
The fundraising event is spearheaded by the MVH–St. James Assistance League, which manages the donations. Each veteran is provided a personal gift with the goal of bringing warmth, joy, and honor to those who have served the United States. Previous gifts have included large screen digital clocks, jackets, sweater vests and electric razors.
The two organizations work together and make a pledge that no veteran is overlooked, whether they have family nearby or further away. Regardless of public recognition, the commitment is made to make each veteran’s Christmas a little extra merry and bright with a holiday gift rooted in much gratitude.
“We have freedom, and without our men and women who are serving, have served, and paid the ultimate sacrifice, we as a society would not have these liberties. We owe all of this to our brave heroes,” said Keith Livingstone with the Assistance League–St. James.
Sponsors, including businesses, churches, and individuals provide monetary donations as well as other items, including handwritten cards, hobby materials, slippers, art supplies, books, and holiday treats. In addition, youth groups sing Christmas carols. There are multiple ways for the community to show veterans gratitude, including donating to the Adopt a Vet program, volunteering, or sharing an uplifting story.
“I have had the pleasure of working at the Veterans Home for 18 years, and every year it brings my heart joy to see the veterans enjoy Christmas,” Steen said. “They love to help staff decorate, bake goodies, get Christmas cards, and have a special meal with their loved ones. Our staff are amazing, and truly have a giving soul, and ensure that our heroes enjoy the holiday season. This is made possible from the donations that we get from the community.”
