The University of Missouri Extension is inviting community members to take an active role in shaping the future of local programs and resources by serving on the Phelps County Extension Council. This is a unique opportunity for residents to help guide the educational efforts that improve lives, strengthen families, and build thriving communities across Missouri.
Extension Council members are local citizens who work in partnership with University of Missouri Extension faculty and staff to identify needs and priorities in the county. Together, they ensure that extension programs — in areas such as agriculture, youth development, health, business, and community vitality — meet local goals and make a lasting impact.
Council members play a vital role in:
• Representing the community’s voice in identifying local needs and program priorities.
• Shaping extension programming by working with specialists to plan and deliver educational opportunities.
• Supporting fiscal and operational oversight to ensure effective use of public funds.
• Promoting MU Extension programs and services to increase awareness and community engagement.
Serving on the Extension Council is an excellent way to contribute your leadership, ideas, and passion for your community’s well-being.
Council members are elected by county residents to represent various geographic areas and interests within the county. Elections are held annually in January, and all residents of Phelps County are encouraged to vote. Individuals interested in serving can be nominated by contacting the MU Extension office or by submitting their name for consideration by November 29.
“Council members are the connection between the University and the local community,” said Brandi Richardson, Extension and Engagement Specialist. “Their insight helps us deliver programs that make a real difference — from supporting farm families and small businesses to developing the next generation of leaders through 4-H.”
By serving on the Extension Council, citizens have a direct hand in ensuring that educational resources and university research are accessible and relevant to the people who need them most. It’s a chance to make a positive difference — right where you live.
