Potential new youth football league presented to Cuba City Council

During the Oct. 7 Cuba City Council meeting, a potential new youth football league was presented to the board by Ciara Kitchen, previously vice president of the current Cuba Youth Football League.

Kitchen presented a new league titled, Crawford County Youth Football League. Kitchen said the league would be centered on safety, integrity and opportunity. She said that league would teach life lessons through teamwork, discipline and respect, and giving youth positive examples to look up to.

“It’s about showing them that when adults come together for the right reasons, real and lasting change can happen,” she said.

Kitchen presented a packet with bylaws, safety and abuse prevention policies, conflict of interest policy and new contract proposal with full insurance bid, ensuring everyone is fully protected. She requested approval to replace the current contract in place.

Current Cuba Youth Football League treasurer Amy Jones-Halbert spoke on behalf of the current program.

Jones-Halbert said that there were over 200 kids who participated in spring and fall flag and tackle football, which keeps them engaged, active and connected to their peers. Jones-Halbert then addressed financial concerns that have been brought up by community members by saying that it’s been investigated by local authorities.

“After an extensive investigation by Mike Centunzi of the Cuba PD, there has been no misappropriation of funds or theft related to Cuba youth football. Detective Centunzi’s thorough review confirms accountabilities for all funds. If there are any further questions regarding the financials of the league, I encourage you to reach out to detective Centunzi for clarification.”

Jones-Halbert added that the current board has created a new system to keep track of its finances.

“In response to community concerns, to provide greater confidence in our financial practices, we’ve implemented an improved system for financial record keeping to create full transparency as requested,” Jones Halbert said.

The City Council said that they will review information from both parties and will table their decision until a future meeting.
