STEELVILLE — The Steelville High School cross country team competed on Nov. 1 in the Class 2 District 3 race in Linn to attempt to advance to the state championship meet.
The top 30 runners from each race advanced and the Cardinals had one representative from the boy’s and girl’s race qualify. Landon Rutledge continued his brilliant senior year and took sixth place with a 17:11.10 time to continue his career and give himself a chance to run against Missouri’s best. Freshman Adalei Perkins, who also is a Lady Cardinal volleyball player, took 15th in the girl’s race and will be the only Steelville female represented in state competition. The Missouri State High School Activities Association state championships will take place on Nov. 8 in Columbia.
The Cardinals’ boys team finished in 13th place out of 20 participating teams. Hermann took first, Fatima finished second and South Shelby took third. Junior Owen Rutledge narrowly missed qualifying for state action, and finished 35th with a 19:10.90 time. Freshmen Lucas Garms and Jacoby Eaton finished in 98th and 108th with 21:58.90 and 22:45.20 times respectively. Junior Max Harmon took 111th and seniors Wesley Keymann and Aiden Retkowski capped off their Cardinal careers finishing in 127th and 140th with 24:49.30 and 34:04.80 times, respectively.
The Lady Cardinals team finished in seventh place out of 11 teams in the race. Monroe City finished in first, Whitfield took second and Fatima finished in third.
Freshman Elisabeth Warden missed qualifying for state action by less than 20 seconds, and took 32nd with a 23:23.80 time. Junior Lydia Smelser finished in 47th with a 24:14.80 time and sophomore Kendall Brinkley took 53rd with a 24:31.10 time. Junior Emeri Perkins placed 77th with a 26:38.20 time and freshman Stormee Yates took 95th with a 29:30 time to cap off the Lady Cardinals’ season. The Lady Cards didn’t have a senior on the roster, and with freshmen Perkins and Warden at the top of the leaderboards, the Steelville cross country team should have a bright future.
