Three weeks into her job as Steelville’s full-time finance officer, Regina Slovensky is finding her new role rewarding.
“As far as accounting goes, I've always loved to make things balance and knowing that when I hand over the records that they are clean, that is a good thing,” Slovensky said.
Still in training mode, her job entails making sure all the bills are paid, that record-keeping is precise and in good order. In her training, she has been learning the computer system, procedures and how the city of Steelville operates and functions.
“She has a considerable amount of accounting experience. Glad to have her,” said Steelville Mayor Terry Beckham.
A native of Steelville, Slovensky recently returned to the area from Potosi in Washington County. She has an associate of arts degree from East Central College in Union. Additionally, she has 35 years of accounting experience.
“We are thrilled to have Regina Slovensky as our new finance officer. We feel that she will be a valuable asset for our team,” said Jamey Griffith, Steelville city clerk/collector.
Slovensky has worked in public accounting for an accounting firm that took care of businesses' financials from sole proprietors to corporations. She also worked in the accounting department of a business for 15 years and as a church administrator.
“I’ve had a lot of different experiences and avenues in accounting,” she said.
Having varied accounting experience is a benefit in her new job for Steelville. Her diverse opportunities have provided her with a deeper understanding of business, a varied skill set and adaptability.
“I'm looking forward to digging in and getting things the way they need to be,” Slovensky said. “There is a lot to learn and a lot to do. And I'm not afraid of that or hard work. It’s been a good fit here and people are great to work with and very helpful. It’s great to see all the familiar faces in the community again.”
Slovensky has four adult sons and was married for 40 years before her husband passed earlier this year.
