The St. James Parks and Recreation Department is launching the “Go-Play Scholarship Fund,” designed to help provide financial assistance to children and families who may not be able to afford registration fees for youth programs, leagues and activities offered by the city.
Scholarship amounts will vary based on need and available funding and will cover part of the program registration fees. The funding for applicants will be based on the free lunch program.
“It could be up to 75 percent of the registration fee covered if they’re on the free lunch side of things, up to 50 percent if they’re on the reduced lunch program,” said Parks and Recreation Director Kristy Rich.
Rich has been the parks and recreation director in St. James for the past six years, and this is the first time they’ve introduced a scholarship fund, which is available for any program offered by the parks and recreation department. This is the first year the scholarship is being introduced.
“There were kids who wanted to participate, but the parents couldn’t financially do it, so this was going to be an opportunity to allow those who want to participate the chance to participate,” said Rich. “Every child deserves the chance to play, learn, and grow through sports, arts, and community programs — no matter their financial situation. The Go-Play Scholarship Fund helps make that possible.”
The fund relies on donations and community support to continue offering opportunities for the area youth. Applications are available online at stjamesmo.org on the recreation page or in person at the Parks and Recreation Department, located at 100 Jefferson Street, St James.
