STEELVILLE — The Steelville High School cross country team traveled to Potosi on Oct. 11 to compete in the Potosi Invitational. The Cardinals were shorthanded as Peyton Brooks, Adalei Perkins, and Emeri Perkins were in Belle at the varsity volleyball tournament. Aiden Retkowski, Jacoby Eaton and Lucas Garms ran in the race on the same day they competed at a marching band competition in Potosi.

Steelville still had many notable performances where six runners earned medals for their efforts.

Landon Rutledge continued his stellar senior year and took fifth place in the 5000 meter varsity boys race with a 17:39.25 time. Owen Rutledge finished in 20th with a 19:03.96 time. Max Harmon took 69th and was able to shave two and a half minutes off his time from last year. Wesley Keymann finished in 73rd, and was also able to improve upon his time by two minutes from last year’s meet.

In the girls 5000 meter varsity race, Kendall Brinkley took 26th with a 24:24.14 time and Lydia Smelser finished 30th with a 25:14.69 time. Stormee Yates finished in 45th with a 30:43.74 time.

In the boys 5000 meter JV race, the multi-tasking Garms earned a 23rd place finish with a 23:19.94 time. Eaton took 30th with a personal record 23:39.91 time.

Steelville Middle School’s cross country team received strong performances from Brantley Booker and Peyton Martin who finished in 13th and 14th place, respectively. Julianna Collinson took 34th and Elaina Turnbough finished in 38th for the Lady Cardinals.

Steelville were scheduled to compete Tuesday (Oct. 14) in the Owensville Cross Country Meet, which will be detailed in next week’s paper. The Cardinals will then compete on Oct. 18 in the Farmington Invitational.
