Last week for our “Time with Children” during the service, Elder Michelle Smith needed to see if one of us in the congregation knew how to juggle. Now, I could have said that I know how to juggle, but it’s fortunate that someone else volunteered. Because even though I know how to juggle, I can’t actually do it. I just know how it’s supposed to work.

Most of us who’ve gone to college or trade school have had experienced the vast gulf between having learned a job and actually doing it. And anyone involved in any kind of sport knows the difference between knowing a game and playing it well.

The same applies to our faith. Early on in Sunday School, we’re encouraged to read and remember scripture. We’re praised for the number Bible verses we can memorize. We talk about the Bible being a lamp unto our feet and light unto our path. But knowing what the Bible says, and doing what the Bible says, are two different things. As with any skill, the have to apply ourselves to God’s work, and consistently learn how to do it better.

We may drop the ball occasionally. But as the hands of Jesus, there’s no substitute for doing the very best we can.

We invite you to join us Sunday morning, at 9:30 for adult Sunday School and 10:30 for worship. We’re located on the corner of First and High Street in Steelville. For more information, check out our website at steelvillepresbyterian.org.
