Steelville R-3 to provide free meals for summer

The Steelville R-3 School District is providing free meals throughout the summer for families in the community.

The district participates in a Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which is federally funded by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Eligibility requirements are for children ages 18 and below. There is not an income requirement for families. Students who are not enrolled in the district may receive access to meals.

The district will provide grab and go meal bags for the children, which will include 14 meals in total. Seven meals for breakfast and seven meals for lunch.

A Google form will be posted on the district’s website for families to fill out. A limited number of kits will be available to families who are not signed up for meals, but they are required to have children present during the select pickup dates.

This is the second year Steelville has participated in the SFSP.

Superintendent Steven Vetter said the district was able to provide over 150 meals a week to families last year.

“It helped and filled a need throughout the community,” said Vetter.

Pickup dates are scheduled from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for every Wednesday from June 24 to August 12 at the Steelville Middle School Cafeteria.
