Spring Street Bridge in Steelville closed on May 28 due to a recommendation made by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) after the structure failed an inspection.
The bridge connects Dairy Isle to Church Street near Hoppe Spring Park.
Public Works Director Jason Evans shared the reason for the bridge closure.
“MoDOT has told us that the Spring Street Bridge would not be usable in the future because of its deteriorating structure,” said Evans.
The steel beams below the surface have caused MoDOT to determine that the bridge is no longer stable for through traffic.
One year ago, MoDOT placed the bridge on a six month inspection schedule and decided during the most recent visit that the bridge should be closed.
Steelville has three other bridges and crossings within city limits. Evans said that residents will not be affected by the bridge closure. He added that the bridge at Fourth Street should service people on Church Street that are a block east of the bridge closure.
“There has been some discussion about turning the Spring Street Bridge into a covered pedestrian bridge, although there is nothing happening in the near future,” Evans said.
A May 28 Facebook post outlined that the Spring Street Bridge is no longer open to vehicle or foot traffic, and the bridge is closed.
