The St. James High baseball squad dropped four games - including two to Four Rivers Conference competition - last week.
The Tigers played at league foe Sullivan and lost 15-0 Monday, April 20 then fell at Nelson Hart Park to Belle 13-3 Tuesday, April 21 before losing a tight, 4-3 FRC contest at New Haven Thursday, April 23 and wrapping up the week with a 10-0 setback at Iberia Friday, April 24.
That left the Tigers 1-14 overall and 0-5 in the FRC entering this week.
It’s another full slate this week, as STJ was scheduled to host Hermann Monday, play at Steelville Tuesday and at Union Thursday (4:30 p.m. start).
April 24 - Iberia 10, STJ 0: The Iberia Rangers, who received votes in the Missouri Class 2 state poll last week, got a no-hit pitching performance from senior Christopher Shreve, who also walked two and fanned six during his five-inning gem. In a game stopped by the run rule in five innings, Iberia scored in every frame, getting two in the bottom of the first inning, one in each of the second and third, five in the fourth and one in the fifth. Iberia had five hits and took advantage of nine walks. Junior Isaac Pearson and sophomore Aiden Cruz were the Tiger pitchers. Iberia won the junior varsity game 8-0.
April 23 - New Haven 4, STJ 3: The New Haven Shamrocks plated a run in the bottom of the first inning and the Tigers tied it up in the top of the third. After New Haven regained the lead with a run in the fourth, St. James took a 3-2 edge with two runs in the sixth. However, in the bottom of the sixth New Haven also plated two runs, then shut the Tigers out in the top of the seventh to hold on. The Shamrocks outhit STJ 6-3. Senior Cooper Schacht, senior JV Meurer and senior Eugene Lefebvre each had a hit for the Tigers, with Meurer driving in a run and Meurer, sophomore Patrick Lonning and freshman Jaden Otto scoring the runs. Meurer was the hard-luck losing pitcher, working all six innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven.
April 21 - Belle 13, STJ 3: Belle took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the first inning. Each team scored two runs in the second, then Belle made it 10-2 with a run in the third and three in the fourth. After STJ got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, Belle ended the scoring with a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh. Belle outhit St. James 14-4. Each team made four fielding errors. Otto had two hits and junior Hunter Freeman and Lefebvre each had one for STJ, with Meurer and senior Trevor Mitchell each getting an RBI while Otto scored twice and Lefebvre and Lonning once each. Mitchell went the distance on the mound for St. James, allowing nine earned runs on 14 hits and two walks while fanning five.
April 20 - Sullivan 15, STJ 0: The Tigers were shut out on one hit by their league rival Sullivan Eagles. Sullivan got six runs in the bottom of the first inning, one in the third and eight in the fourth. The Eagles had 10 hits and received seven walks. Senior Max Wilson had the lone hit for St. James. Meurer, Cruz and Otto all pitched for St. James. Sullivan won the JV game 12-3.
