A little rain didn’t deter Cuba’s track and field teams from showing out in front of their home fans and families. On the boy’s side, the Wildcats earned a third place tie with New Haven. Steelville took first place and St. James finished in second place. The Lady Wildcats earned first place as a team after winning seven individual competitions and one relay race. New Haven’s girls took second and Steelville finished in third.
Bourbon High School’s track and field team also competed, despite having a limited number of athletes participate.
Lady Wildcat sophomore Justice Evrard shined the brightest for Cuba, earning first place medals in four separate events. Evrard took first place in the 100 and 200 meter dash events after completing them in 13.57 seconds and 27.52 seconds, respectively. She showed her versatility, also taking gold in the 400 meter race with a time of 1:04.51 and in the high jump leaping 1.54 meters.
Senior Cailyn Hulsey also competed in the high jump and earned third place after jumping 1.34 meters.
Sophomore Ella Basham finished in first place in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:41.81. Basham was also a part of Cuba’s first place 4x800 relay team along with her sister, senior Cadynce Basham, and sophomores Savannah Vass and Lily Becherer.
Cadynce Basham took third place in the 1600 meter race after running it in 6:25.92. Vass earned fourth place in the 800 meter race after finishing in 2:59.32.
Cuba’s duo of sisters continued to thrive as Teryn Vass, the older sister of Savannah, earned first place in the girls pole vault competition after leaping 2.40 meters. Teryn Vass also contributed to Cuba’s third place 4x100 relay team along with Becherer, sophomore Makenlee Lorenz and senior Cynthia Viramontes.
Viramontes and Lorenz also competed in the long jump and triple jump events. Viramontes took fourth in the long jump after leaping 4.06 meters and finished seventh in the triple jump with a 8.25 meter hop. Lorenz took ninth in the long jump with a 3.41 meter leap and earned seventh place in the triple jump with a 7.81 meter jump.
Senior Shannon Black earned two medals competing in the field events. Black dominated the discus competition, taking first place after hurling it 30.21 meters. She also finished in third place in the shot put event with a 9.30 meter heave.
Bourbon sophomore Reese Bell took seventh place in the 300 meter hurdles in 58.82 seconds and finished in sixth place in the triple jump competition with a 3.65 meter leap.
Junior Payton Helton also competed in the triple jump and long jump events. Helton earned eighth place in the triple jump with a 7.69 meter hop and took sixth place in the long jump after leaping 3.65 meters. Bourbon sophomore Jaelynne Rohrer took 10th place in the long jump with a 3.29 meter leap.
While Cuba’s boys team didn’t have any first place finishers, they did have multiple noteworthy performances.
Senior Noah Halbert continued to thrive in the hurdles events, taking second place in the 300 meter hurdles and third place in the 110 meter hurdles after finishing in 45.06 and 18.64 seconds, respectively.
Sophomore Jamison Scott and freshman Preston Hulsey also competed in the 110 meter hurdles and took sixth and seventh place after finishing in 21.34 and 22.39 seconds, respectively.
Sophomore Brayden Lewis earned fourth place in the 200 meter dash after completing it in 25.09 seconds. Lewis’s best performance of the day came in the triple jump, earning him second place with a 12.12 meter leap. He also took sixth place in the long jump after jumping 5.45 meters.
Freshman Zaylen Kammer was Cuba’s top finisher in the 400 meter race, placing sixth after finishing in 58.44 seconds.
Sophomore Christian DeLuna took second place in the boys pole vault after finishing with a 3.35 meter hop. DeLuna also took seventh in the 800 meter race with a 2:26.82 time.
Fellow sophomore John Vandegriffe earned third place in the discus competition after tossing it 35.38 meters. Junior Zane Brown threw the discus as well, taking fifth place with a 34.21 meter heave. Brown was also Cuba’s top shot putter and javelin thrower. He earned fourth place in the shot put event with a 11.77 meter toss and finished in 10th in the javelin competition with a 27.40 meter hurl. Vandegriffe also threw the javelin, taking 12th place with a 27.26 meter launch.
Brown, Vandegriffe, senior Cole Henke and junior Brate Hart competed in the 4x100 relay throwers event and earned third place after finishing in 57.24 seconds.
Freshman Drawe Froning was Bourbon’s top finisher, earning eighth place in the 1600 meter race after finishing in 5:35.11.
Sophomore Logan Bell took 21st in the 100 meter dash with a 13.79 second time. Freshman Daniel Wagner and sophomore Presley Hilsey competed in the 200 meter dash and finished in 15th and 21st, respectively with 28.63 and 36.05 second finishes.
