A previous meeting of the Cuba Parks and Recreation Board was held on April 15, but didn’t have a quorum, so it was rescheduled for April 20 to discuss and applications for employment at the city pool.
They had 11 applications, including one for manager, one for assistant manager, five for lifeguards, three for concessions and front desk and one for any position.
Cadance Silva was the only applicant for the manager position, and the recommendation to hire her for the position was approved with a 6-0 vote.
Beth Kight, board member, said that Silva is a Life Guard Instructor (LGI) certified, which means she can train the lifeguards who aren’t certified.
There was one application for assistant manager, which the board is hesitant to recommend. Beth Kight, board member, said they are concerned about his availability for the duration of the pool being open.
“He goes out-of-state (for college), and he plays on the football team,” Kight said.
With him being on an out-of-state football team because they are worried he would have to leave a couple of weeks before the pool closes for the season.
They tabled the decision in hopes of getting more applicants for the position.
The board started with the lifeguard applications that were already certified.
A motion to recommend hiring Micah Volner, Kaylynn Wilkerson, Shannon Black and Marissa Foster as lifeguards was approved with a 6-0 vote.
If lifeguard certification is completed, Jadelyn Weber was recommended for lifeguard, front desk and concessions with a 6-0 vote.
Kight was the one to make the suggestion, adding that she would not work as a lifeguard and concessions and front desk worker on the same day.
Makayla Wells and Gunner Weber were approved with a 6-0 vote to work front desk and concessions.
Owen Shelton received a 6-0 vote from the board to recommend him being hired as concessions worker, while Aiden Rice received a 5-0 vote for the same position. Karina Rice, board member, has to abstain from voting because of a conflict of interest.
All hiring recommendations were brought to the Cuba Board of Aldermen to be voted on in their April 21 meeting.
Applications for pool positions will remain open until all positions are filled.
The parks and rec board discussed increasing the prices for the pool, but decided to table the discussion until they can get more information about other pools and can make a more informed decision.
The board will hold its next meeting at 6 p.m. on April 28 at the City Hall Council Room.
