Steelville High School’s golf team is in the home stretch of its season after competing in its final Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) meet on May 4 and in a practice round on May 7 in Montgomery County.
Steelville seniors Nick Hoff, Flint Harmon and Wesley Keymann were honored along with the rest of the Cardinal’s spring sport athletes on May 4 before Steelville’s baseball team took on Belle at Steelville City Park.
The Cardinals then played in the Class 2 District 1 tournament on May 11 at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson, which will be detailed in next week’s edition. Steelville’s qualifiers will compete in the Class 2 State Tournament on May 18 and 19 at Bogey Creek Golf Course in Farmington.
GVC meet in Cuba
The Cardinals golf team cruised down Highway 19 on May 4 to compete in the final GVC meet of the year at Holiday Ranch Golf Course. The Cardinals finished in second as a team, while Belle earned first place as a team and had the top-individual performer.
Belle’s Kelhen Struemph shot a 72 to take first place and teammates Gage Vandergriffe and Avery Craigmiles finished in second and third place after shooting an 80 and an 83, respectively.
Senior Nick Hoff was Steelville’s top performer, earning eighth place and the Cardinal’s lone all-conference selection after shooting a 94.
In addition to Belle’s top three, the rest of the GVC All-Conference selections include Cuba’s Cole Kellemen and Kye Williams, Belle’s Kaegan Kinsey, Bourbon’s Emmett Jones and Viburnum’s Austin Turnbough.
Wesley Keymann finished in 10th, Jarrett West took 11th, Flint Harmon 12th and Joe Brand finished in 13th to round out the rest of Steelville’s performances.
May 7 in Montgomery County
Steelville traveled to Montgomery County on May 7 to compete in what Cardinal head coach Bryan Ruediger described as “more of a practice round and not a real meet.”
The Cardinals played nine holes and West, Hoff and Harmon all shot a 48 to lead the way for Steelville. Keymann shot a 52 and Brand shot a 53 to cap Steelville’s performances on the day. Hermann and Montgomery County also participated, but their scores were not accessible.
