SMS track and field team wraps up season in Cuba Invitational

The spring track and field season for Steelville Middle School athletes concluded after the Cardinals competed in the May 4 Cuba Invitational.

Steelville’s girls team finished in third place and the boys team took fifth place in the small schools divisions.

Eighth-grader Wyntr Yates was the Lady Cardinal’s top performer, earning third place in the 400 meter race and fifth place in the long jump competition. She ran the 400m in 1:09.44 and leapt 3.90 meters in the long jump.

Steelville seventh-grader Mia Dodson took seventh place in the discus competition and 17th place in the shot put event after tossing the discus 17.29 meters and heaving the shot put 7.33 meters.

Elaina Turnbough finished in sixth place in the 3200 meter race with a 6:59.07 time and took 14th in the long jump competition with a 3.34 meter leap.

Mary Edgar ran the 100 meter and 800 meter races, earning 10th and 13th place with 14.69 and 3:23.41 finishing times, respectively. Maddi Settles and Zoey Brown earned 13th and 15th places in the 200 meter dash with 32.97 and 34.51 second finishes, respectively. Miley Wright ran the 400 meter in 1:14.61 to take ninth place and Kameka Fowler ran the 800 meter in 3:47.84 to finish in 15th.

Brooklyn Kelley earned seventh place in the shot put event with a 8.65 meter toss and Maddie Verdu took 11th place in the discus competition with a 15.06 meter throw. The Lady Cardinal’s top relay showing came from their 4x800 team of Turnbough, Settles, Wright and Yates who earned third place after finishing in 11:58.63.

Steelville eighth-grader Andrew Jensen was a standout performer on the boys’ side. Jensen earned first place in the 400 meter race and took fourth place in the 100 meter hurdles and in the long jump competition. He ran the 400m in 58.94 seconds, completed the hurdles in 17.32 and leapt 4.50 meters in the long jump.

Peyton Martin and Brantley Booker ran the 1600 meter race, earning fifth and sixth place with 5:25.22 and 5:40.17 times, respectively.  Crosby Bratcher ran the 100 and 200 meter dashes, finishing 14th and 11th with 13.86 and 28.28 second finishes, respectively. 

Harlan Terry competed in the 100 meter dash, taking 22nd with a 18.36 finish. Brayden Banister finished in 13th in the 100 meter hurdles with a 21.46 time and Tristan Demo earned 20th place in the 200 meter dash with a 32.85 second finish. Daniel Henry and Jase Gambill ran the 800 meter race, earning 10th and 14th place with 2:49.10 and 3:07.95 times, respectively. 

Merl Vetter took 20th in the discus competition with a 17.09 meter toss and Lincoln Sackman and Jordan Boone finished in 13th and 15th in the shot put event with 7.94 and 7.69 meter heaves, respectively. 

Steelville’s 4x800 relay team of Jensen, Booker, Gambill and Martin earned second place in the competition after finishing in 10:11.05.
