India R. Copeland, 21, of Bourbon, was arrested on Oct. 12 on allegations of a class E third-degree domestic assault felony.
Deputy Alexander Coleman, of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, wrote in his probable cause statement that at approximately 12:50 p.m., he was dispatched to the 6000 block of Rock Road. Upon arrival, he contacted the victim, identified as TK, who said her granddaughter, Copeland, was bothering her daughter, who had just had surgery. When TK asked her to stop, she said that Copeland became violent and started to slap, then punched TK on the left side of her face.
“The force of the punch knocked TK to the floor where she landed on a plastic fan, breaking the fan and hurting her left shoulder,” Coleman wrote.
TK’s son had then come into the room, helped her off the ground and held Copeland until she calmed down.
Coleman observed a medium-sized red mark on TK’s face where she had said she was punched, and a preexisting bruise on her left shoulder that was very red. TK mentioned that she already had a bruise there, but the fall made it worse.
When he spoke to Copeland, she claimed that “the family was having a family day, and ‘things escalated.’” She admitted to hitting TK because she was “not herself.”
The range of penalties for a class E felony is imprisonment in the custody of the Missouri Department of Corrections for a term of not less than one year and not more than four, imprisonment for a special term that is not less than one year or more than four in a county jail or authorized penal institution, a fine that doesn’t exceed $10,000 or both imprisonment and a fine.
She was arrested and taken to the Crawford County Jail, but has bonded out.
Copeland is scheduled to appear at 9 a.m. on Nov. 12 before Judge Patrick Horsefield’s 42nd Circuit Court.
