Vernon Anthony Salter Jr. of St. James Missouri was born June 27, 1945 in Stratford-on-Avon, England to Vernon Salter Sr. and Ann (Collins) Salter and passed away Sunday, March 15, 2026 at the age of 80 years.

He married Kathy McDermott.

He earned his undergraduate degree in Education at Harris Teachers College and his Master of Education from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri through the GI Bill.

From 1969 to 1971, Vernon served in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne Division, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He saw combat and was awarded the Bronze Star during the Vietnam conflict.

Prior to being drafted into the Army, he taught Junior High science at Hazelwood in St. Louis, Missouri. Upon returning from the service, he moved to St. James, Missouri and spent 36 years working for the Boys Town organization.

He enjoyed life on his farm, raising cattle, making hay and fixing the equipment. He had several hobbies including flying his ultralight airplane, riding his motorcycle and strumming on his guitar.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and younger brother, Andy. 

  He is survived by his wife, Kathy Salter; three sons, Michael and wife Cyndi of St. James, Missouri, John of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Joseph and wife Heidi of Ashland, Missouri; brother, Paul Salter of St. Louis, Missouri; four grandchildren, Zack, Dylan (Katlyn), Hanna and Emma; other relatives and friends.

Celebration of life service will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2026 at the Nelson Hart Community Center in St. James, Missouri.
