The Lady Wildcats volleyball team opened a three-day, four-match stretch on Sept. 30 with a home game against St. James. The evening was designated as Youth Appreciation Night, with Cuba elementary and middle school volleyball players recognized between the JV and varsity matches. Both Lady Wildcat teams made the youth teams proud with convincing victories. Cuba’s JV team won both sets 25-8 and the Lady Wildcats’ varsity team won 25-13, 25-14 and 25-14 to complete the sweep.

Cuba’s varsity team then traveled to Owensville on Oct. 1 to compete in the Dutchgirls C Team Tri against Pacific and Owensville. In the best-of-three format, the Lady Wildcats handled both teams in two sets. Cuba defeated Pacific 25-16 and 25-14 before winning close matches against the Dutchgirls 26-24 and 25-20 to end the evening undefeated.

The Lady Wildcats returned home on Oct. 2 to take on Gasconade Valley Conference opponent Steelville High School on Pink Out and Staff Appreciation Night.

Cuba’s JV team set the tone for the night and overpowered the Cardinals in the first set, winning 25-9. The second set was hard fought, but the Lady Wildcats reigned supreme and won 26-24. Cuba’s varsity team won the first two sets 25-15 and 25-12 before a tense back-and-forth third set where Steelville showed resilience and won 27-25 to continue the match. The Lady Wildcats didn’t waver and won the fourth set 25-20 to win the match. The third set was Cuba varsity team’s only loss all week. They ended the three-day stretch winning an impressive 10 out of 11 sets.

Cuba’s JV team traveled to Potosi on Oct. 4 to compete in the Potosi JV Volleyball Tournament. The Lady Wildcats started strong, winning both sets against Kingston 25-16 and 25-11. Those would be the only wins for Cuba as they fell to Potosi 19-25 and 18-25. The Lady Wildcats then lost to Hillsboro in the bracket game 14-25 and 23-25 before taking on Potosi again in the third place game. Potosi won 25-21 and 25-16 to end the Lady Wildcats’ day in defeat.

Cuba hosted Belle on Oct. 6, had its last regular season home match on Oct. 7 and honored its seniors before the game. Details of the game and photos of the festivities will be shown in next week’s edition.

The Lady Wildcats will travel to Hillsboro to take on Grandview on Oct. 9 before competing in the Belle Varsity Volleyball Tournament on Oct. 11.
