Bourbon High School’s baseball team won two out of three games they played this past week after defeating Grandview (Hillsboro) on May 4 and Viburnum on May 7 before losing to Cuba on May 8.

The Warhawk’s scheduled game on May 6 versus St. Paul Lutheran was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Bourbon is now 3-9 on the year and hosted St. James on May 12 in its last regular season game, which will be detailed in next week’s edition. The Warhawks will have a rematch with Cuba at 3 p.m. on May 14 at Belle City Park in the quarterfinals of the Class 3 District 8 Tournament. Bourbon is seeded fifth, Cuba is the number-four seed and the winner will play number-one seeded Belle on May 18 at 3 p.m.

Warhawks wallop Grandview (Hillsboro) for run-rule victory

Bourbon’s bats came alive in their third home game of the season against the Grandview Eagles. The Warhawks scored four runs in the first inning before pouring on nine runs in the second to blow the game open. Dominick Akers came off the bench to deliver the game-ending run batted in, driving in Garret Wallis to give Bourbon a 15-0 victory in three innings.

Bourbon’s 15 runs scored were easily a season-high outburst of production. The Warhawks hadn’t scored more than five runs in their previous nine games to start the season.

Ian Mueller navigated through three innings on the mound with an efficient 30 pitches. Mueller struck out one and didn’t walk a batter while earning the victory.

Every Bourbon starter reached base and scored at least one run. Emmett Jones led the Warhawks with three hits and three runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Chase Bouse laced a pair of singles and scored twice, Dawson King added two hits and Mueller chipped in a single, a walk and two runs scored.

Anson Hormann walked three times and scored three runs and Tariq Moore singled, walked and scored once. Wallis singled twice and walked before coming around to score the game-winning run. Chase Perschbacher singled and scored and Allan Studeny singled, walked and scored to round out Bourbon’s offensive outburst.

Bourbon wins road finale over Viburnum

The Warhawks played their final regular season road game of the year on May 7 in Viburnum. Bourbon scored two runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as the blue and white cruised to a 9-2 victory for their third win of the season.

Garrett Wallis started on the bump and hurled four scoreless innings on 76 pitches to earn the victory. King and Mueller came on in relief and threw 28 and 21 pitches, respectively before Anson Hormann came on for the final batter and ended the game after two pitches.

The blue and white showed their offensive depth as seven Warhawks recorded multiple base hits. Jones, King, Perschbacher, Wallis, Mueller, Moore and Hormann all had a pair of hits. Bouse singled and scored and King, Jones and Hormann each scored two runs.

Warhawks’ senior night spoiled by Cuba’s ace pitcher

Bourbon honored its senior golfers and baseball players, Ian Mueller and Chase Perschbacher, before their game with their Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) rivals, the Cuba Wildcats.

After the festivities, there wasn’t too much to cheer about for Warhawk fans as Cuba starting pitcher Braden Gipson hurled a complete-game shutout, leading the Wildcats to an 11-0 victory.

Bourbon had its best chance to score in the bottom of the first inning after leadoff hitter Emmett Jones laced a double into the right center field gap and Dawson King followed with a sacrifice bunt to get Jones over to third base. But Gipson bore down and held the Warhawks scoreless before going into cruise control mode.

The Warhawks were held to just three hits, one from Jones, King and Chase Bouse as Gipson struck out 12 and walked just two batters.

Mueller got the start on senior day and went 3 1 1/3 innings, scattering nine hits and six earned runs, while striking out eight and walking none.

Hormann came out of the bullpen and threw 3 innings, allowing six hits, three runs, while striking out five. King came on to get the final two outs and did so on 20 pitches.

Cuba was led by its top four hitters in the order, who combined for 11 hits and eight runs scored. Cleanup hitter Adam Doyle drove in a game-high five runs out of the cleanup spot to lead the Wildcats.
