Track and Field season is officially underway for Bourbon High School athletes.

The Warhawks competed in the Sullivan High School Quad on March 23 against students from Sullivan, St. Clair, Union and Pacific. Bourbon’s boys’ and girls’ team each came in fifth place as a team, but there were notable performances by various Warhawks. St. Clair won the boys’ varsity meet and Union’s girls’ varsity team emerged victorious.

Bourbon senior Brett Payne, who recently committed to Mineral Area college to continue his running career, won first place in the 800 meter race with a 2:11.34 finishing time. Payne finished nearly four seconds ahead of his next opponent, St. Clair’s Attycus Hill.

Fellow Bourbon senior Ethan Williamson was also a standout performer for the Warhawks’ boys team. Williamson took 15th in the 100 meter dash with a 12.64 time and finished in 17th in the 200 meter dash with a 26.76 time. Williamson also competed in the 4x100 relay and the 4x200 relay races. Bourbon came in fifth place in the 4x100 relay and took first place in the 4x200 relay race. Other members of the first-place finish included Liam Warren, Daniel Wagner and Logan Bell.

Junior Joseph Woods was also a notable performer for the Warhawks. Woods finished 21st in the 400 meter race with a 1:05.44 time and took 12th in the javelin throw with a 24.40 meter heave.

Bourbon’s girls’ basketball team showed that their athleticism translates from on the court to the track, and were well represented throughout the competition.

Freshman Savanna Vance took ninth place in the 100 meter dash with a 14.58 time and finished in 12th in the 200 meter dash with a 31.64 time. Vance also took sixth place in the long jump with a 12-foot leap and was a part of 4x200 relay team that won first place with a 2:05.91 time along with fellow hoopers Brianna Bouse, Reese Bell and Kinzii Withorn.

Bouse took 19th in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with 15.57 and 33.18 times, respectively. She also finished in 11th place in the long jump with an 11-foot leap.

The Lady Warhawks also had notable performances in the field events, led by sophomore Hayden Terry’s performance in the shot put. Terry launched the shot put 8.5 meters to finish in third place out of 16 competitors. Lady Hawk freshmen Avrie Thurmond and Faith Callahan also competed in the shot put and finished in 11th and 15th place, respectively.

Bourbon standout volleyball player, senior Kaylee Enke, finished in fourth place in the javelin throw with a 31-meter launch. Enke’s toss was less than one meter away from third-place finisher, Kylee Brandt of St. Clair who tossed the javelin 31.91 meters. Withorn came in fifth place in the javelin toss with a 22.28-meter heave.

Both of Bourbon’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams are scheduled to compete in the Cuba Relays on Monday, March 30, which will be detailed in next week’s edition. The Warhawks will then resume action on April 7 to compete in the Pacific Invitational.
