GASCONADE COUNTY — Gasconade County residents are encouraged to take precautions during periods of extreme heat and check on neighbors who may have difficulty getting around.
Gasconade County Emergency Management Director Clyde Zelch said residents in the Hermann area may seek relief from the heat at the Gasconade County Courthouse. In the Owensville area, the Catholic church, Walmart and library are among the locations available to those needing a place to cool down.
Residents who cannot find assistance may contact the Gasconade County Emergency Management Agency or call 911. Zelch said emergency generators are also available at Reinhold Electric in Rosebud if an extended power outage creates a need for a cooling location.
“We’re a small community. We don’t have a lot of resources, so check on your neighbors,” Zelch said.
The National Weather services advises residents to drink plenty of fluids, say in an air-conditioned room when possible and stay out of the sun. They remind everyone to never leave children and pets unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Call 911 in an emergency.
