A successful track and field season for Cuba High School’s athletes came to an end in the Class 3 Sectional 3 Meet May 16 in Buffalo. The Wildcats didn’t have an athlete finish in the top-four of their event, which would’ve qualified them for the Class 3 State Meet on May 23 in Columbia.

Cuba seniors Shannon Black, Cadynce Basham and Noah Halbert all competed in the meet hours before they graduated that evening back at Cuba High School.

Black, a district champion shot putter and district runner up in the discus competition, narrowly missed qualifying for states the shot put after taking fifth place in sectionals with a 10.4 meter heave. She finished in seventh place in the discus competition after tossing it 27.73 meters.

Cadynce Basham was a member of Cuba’s 4x800 relay team along with Katherine Lily Becherer, Savanna Vass and Ella Basham that qualified for sectionals after taking third place in districts. The quartet completed the sectional race in 12:11.82, which earned them seventh place.

Ella Basham also competed individually in the 800 meter run, taking sixth place after crossing the finish line in 2:38.62.

Halbert ran the 300 meter hurdles in 45.29 seconds, capping his high school career with a seventh-place finish.

Sophomore Christian Deluna advanced to sectionals after earning third place during districts in the pole vault competition. DeLuna hoisted himself over the 3.1 meter bar in sectionals, which earned him seventh place.
