After competing in the Cuba Relays on March 30, Cuba and Bourbon High School’s track and field teams returned to action on April 7 in the Pacific Invitational at Pacific High School. Cuba was scheduled to take part in the New Bloomfield Invitational on April 2, but the meet was cancelled due to the inclement weather.
Cuba standout sophomore Justice Evrard was the lone first-place winner for either school. Evrard took first place in the girl’s high jump with a 1.50 meter leap. Evrard also took third place in the 200-meter race with a 27.88 time, fifth place in the 100-meter race with a 13.55 finish and fifth place in the long jump with a 4.40-meter hop.
Lady Wildcat junior Teryn Vass also had a solid showing in multiple events. Vass took eighth place in the 400-meter race with a 1:12.39 time, 11th place in the 200-meter dash with a 29:38 finish and earned seventh place in the pole vault competition with a 2.40-meter leap. Vass’s younger sister, sophomore Savannah Vass, competed in the 3200-meter race and finished in 10th place with a 16:10.42 time.
Speaking of sisters, senior Cadynce Basham and sophomore Ella Basham continued their strong seasons competing in long-distance races. Ella Basham finished in ninth place in the 800-meter race with a 2:47.43 time and Cadynce Basham took 12th in the 1600-meter race with a 6:35.62 finish. Both sisters were also a part of Cuba’s 4x800 relay team along with Savannah Vass and sophomore Lily Becherer that finished in fifth place with a 12:18.44 time.
Sophomore Kendra Humphrey competed in both hurdles events and finished in ninth place in the 100-meter hurdles with a 20.58 time and took 15th in the 300-meter hurdles with a 1:00.46 finish.
In the field events, Cuba senior Shannon Black was the Lady Cat’s top performer. Black took third place in the shot put with a 9.66-meter heave.
Senior Cynthia Viramontes finished in seventh place in the triple jump with a 8.28-meter leap and took 12th place in the long jump with a 3.73-meter jump. Fellow senior Cailyn Hulsey took 13th place in the high jump with a 1.30-meter leap.
Freshman Ryleigh Blackmon finished 21st in the javelin throw with a 10.04-meter toss and took 20th in the shot put competition with a 6.24-meter heave.
Sophomore Makenlee Lorenz earned a 10th place finish in the triple jump with a 7.84-meter leap.
The Lady Warhawks only had a handful of competitors on the girls side.
Sophomore Reese Bell took 14th place in the 300-meter hurdles with a 1:00.38 finish, 13th place in the long jump with a 3.69-meter leap and 14th in the triple jump with a 7.48-meter attempt.
Junior Payton Helton finished in 16th place in the long jump with a 3.53-meter leap and took 11th place in the triple jump with a 7.73-meter attempt.
Sophomore Jaelynne Rohrer also competed in the long jump and posted a 3.37-meter attempt.
Fellow sophomore Hayden Terry had the Lady Warhawk’s best finish of the day, taking sixth place in the shot put competition with a 8.90-meter toss.
On the boys side, Cuba senior Noah Halbert and sophomores Brayden Lewis and John Vandegriffe all had top-five showings.
Halbert took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 46:17 time, sixth in the 110-meter hurdles and 10th place in the 100-meter dash.
Lewis finished in fifth place in the triple jump event with a 11.60-meter attempt. Freshman Billie Thompson also competed in the triple jump and took 20th with a 8.54-meter leap.
Vandegriffe took fourth place in the discus throw with a 36.06-meter toss and finished in 22nd in the javelin throw with a 22.27-meter heave.
Junior Zane Brown earned ninth place in the shot put with a 11.14-meter throw, 10th place in the discus competition with a 32.45-meter toss and 19th in the javelin throw with a 25:55-meter heave.
Sophomore Christian DeLuna earned seventh place in the pole vault competition with a 2.75-meter leap and fellow sophomore Jamison Scott took ninth place in the high jump with a 1.60-meter leap and earned 10th place in the 100-meter hurdles with a 22:03 time.
Juniors Tandon Baker and Brody Bayless each earned ninth-place finishes during the meet. Baker posted a 2:25.60 in the 800-meter race and Bayless ran a 12:52.40 in the 3200-meter race.
Bourbon’s boys didn’t have a top-10 finisher but had multiple admirable performances.
Sophomore Logan Bell earned 13th place in the triple jump with a 9.81 leap for the Warhawk’s top finish.
Junior Joseph Woods took 16th in the javelin throw with a 28.26-meter toss and finished in 21st in the 800-meter race with a 2:48.55 time.
Freshman Drawe Froning finished in 17th in the 1600-meter race with a 5:48.66 time.
Sophomore Daniel Wagner and freshman Liam Warren both competed in the 200-meter dash and finished in 19th and 20th place, with 28.97 and 29.50 finishing times, respectively.
Sophomore Cain Brenk and freshman Kaden Badger took part in the 100-meter dash and took 21st and 22nd with 12:86 and 13:02 finishes, respectively.
Junior Kyle Ogden-Davis competed in the discus throw, shot put and javelin toss events. Ogden Davis finished in 25th in the discus throw with a 19.83-meter toss, 23rd in the shot put with a 7.35-meter heave and 24th in the javelin throw with a 18.37-meter launch.
Both schools will compete next on April 16 in the Cuba Invitational. Field events will begin at 3:30 p.m. at 1 Wildcat Pride Drive.
