A 23-year-old Rolla woman was involved in a fatal car accident on March 28 at 2:10 a.m. on County Road 1000, a quarter mile east of Highway B in St. James.
According to a crash report by the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP), the woman was driving a 2013 Cadillac SRX eastbound on County Road 1000 when the vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck a culvert.
The driver returned to the road and over-corrected, causing her to travel back off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle overturned and the woman was ejected before the vehicle hit a mailbox and a tree.
She was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:31 a.m. by Phelps County Coroner Ernie Coverdell and transported to the Phelps County Morgue. MSHP noted that the woman was not wearing a seatbelt during the incident.
The Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, St. James Police Department, St. James Fire Department and St. James Ambulance District assisted at the scene.
The crash marks Troop I’s second fatality in March and fifth fatality in 2026.
