Four juvenile females and an 18-year-old adult female had various injuries in a car crash that occurred in Phelps County early Saturday morning.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the crash happened at 12:45 a.m. at the 189 mile marker at the I-44 eastbound exit ramp.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Troop I crash report, the driver, age 16 of St. James with four occupants, age 16 of St. James, age 16 of Rolla, age 15 of St. James and age 18 of St. James, in a 2016 Jeep Wrangler attempted to overtake a 2009 Volvo VNL semi truck operated by a 60-year-old male from Detroit, Mich. In the attempt, the female driver failed to clear the lane before merging, causing the vehicle to hit the front of the semi. The Jeep then traveled off the right of the road and overturned, ejecting two occupants from the vehicle.

The driver of the Jeep, and a 16-year-old occupant and 15-year-old occupant were transported by Phelps Health ambulance to Phelps Health in Rolla with minor or moderate injuries.

The 16-year-old occupant from Rolla was flown by Air Evac to University Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries. The 18-year-old occupant was flown by Mercy Life Line to University Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries. Neither was wearing a seat belt, according to the MSHP report.

One of the teens, 16, was wearing a seat belt. The report listed “unknown” for seat belt usage by the 15-year-old and the other 16-year-old. Rolla city fire and Phelps County deputies assisted the MSHP at the scene. The Volvo was driven from the scene and the Jeep was removed by C&C Towing.
